Thistleknowe Care Home Smiles Promotion Day

Our Activities champion Evelyn McKechan arranged the day.

Families and local groups were informed about the day and invited to attend so we had quite a large turn out for the big day on Sunday 25th May.

We linked the day in with our 'Health promoting Care programme' which we volunteered to develop alongside NHS Scotland.

The Aim was:

To make people 'Smile' by having fun whilst raising awareness about Oral Health.

The fun and smiles bit would have the knock on affect of benefiting the general mental health and well being of everyone involved with Oral health games teaching those taking part and watching some important facts about dental care.

Visitors had the chance to win a fruit basket at the main entrance with our raffle and then moved down the corridor into the main lounge area.

We had a good turn out of children who were keen to take part in the games.

We started with a quiz on items that visitors read on the notice board culminating in the length of time you should brush your teeth for.

This lead to a tooth brushing competition.

Visitors had to brush there teeth for what they thought was 2 minutes, the recommended time for brushing your teeth. The closest to the two minutes won an Apple!

We then had a smiley face competition using the props provided. The best smiley face won an apple again!

So not to upset anyone we had made a goody bag up with a toothbrush toothpaste and egg timer to take away with them.

The residents and staff enjoyed the action and company of all the visitors and visitors went away with a little more knowledge and awareness of Oral Health and a good experience of the care home.
